Annonay as early the 6th century, the outstanding quality of the waters in and around Annonay was acknowledged as essential in the development of the leather and paper industries.
As the birthplace of many inventors, the city is imprinted with the influence of may famous men.The Montgolfier brothers who invented the aerostat and the hydraulic ram and succeeded on June 4th ,1783 in flying the first hot-air balloon ever built. Later Marc Seguin, another famous man from Annonay invented suspension bridges and the tubular boiler. He is also remembered for being one of the first who pioneered railway transportation in France.
Its public library, its theatre along with the César Filhol folk art Museum and the Canson et Montgolfier Museum where visitors are initiated into paper making, are the adequate places for those wishing to know more about local life and traditions.
