Bécherel, the highest point in Ille-et-Vilaine, is a small medieval town located between Rennes and Dinan. It knew very prosperous years during the 17th centuries, with an intensive trade activity. Until the industrial revolution, Bécherel was very famous for its linen and hemp yarn market, recalled today by the name of numerous streets: " rue de la Filanderie, rue de la Chanvrerie …" Then, Bécherel had to adapt itself to the various eras and to the social and economic evolution. Today, a cultural development is taking place! in 1989, Savenn Douar association took the initiative of converting Bécherel into the Town of the Book. Then, a number of booksellers and second-hand booksellers began to find the old town interesting and decided to acquire the places free from any economic activity. A new life began for Bécherel. After HAY ON WAYE, Walles, and REDU, Belgium, Bécherel became the third Book Town in Europe. Nowadays, the city is not only attractive because its cultural aspect side. Today, 13 booksellers, one Art Workshop, one book-binder are waiting for your visit in Bécherel.
