First french fishing port, Concarneau is an important holiday resort which has developed around the Ville-Close, an old fortified town dating back to the14th century and modified by Vauban in the 17th century. Chief town in the area, Concarneau offers well-equipped commercial and sporting facilities all year round. Its imposing ramparts shelter the yachting centre which main advantage is be right in the town centre. In a well sheltered bay, Concarneau offers several safe and sandy beaches. In the heart of the town, the fishing port is very lively especially in the morning. The unloading of the fish from the trawlers starts at 11 p.m. and auctioning takes place from 6.00 am the first five days of the week.
Everyday in the indoor market, fresh fish, lobster, fruit and vegetable can be found by even the most demanding of customers./ Don’t miss the colourful and varied open-air market which takes place in front of the Ville-close on Mondays and Fridays (8 am till1 pm). The culinary traditions of the very old Concarneau canneries are carried on by 3 small factories which have top quality products on sale (fish soup, scallops, sardines). Concarneau is a bleu town , and you can see feasts as “La fête des Filets bleues”.
